Book Dummies I have made: a Webinar presentation for scbwi
Below are some of the images from the webinar I presented to the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators of NC two nights ago.
Above: An overview of various dummies I've made:
My dummy for Little Red Writing is shown here, juxtaposed with Melissa Sweet's final illustrated cover on the published book. And My Zero the Hero dummy is front and center. Far right: a text-only dummy for an Ant Hill easy-to-read.
Above and below: The storyboards I sent to Abrams Appleseed and the mini-dummies I made from them. Abrams acquired the Mini Myths board book series based on these storyboards. The series brings mythology to preschoolers in an parallel story based on the myth, with a summary of the myth on the final page. Children ages 1-4 can experience Hercules's Twelve Labors (which he performs in order to right a wrong done to his family--in this case, to his little sister). And Pandora's humorous struggle not to open the box.

"less a retelling of the story
of Pandora than a modern (and entirely delightful) twist on it.
Instructed by her mother not to open a neatly wrapped box,
Pandora grins mischievously at readers. “I am not opening thebox. I am only touching it.” Luckily, after bouncing on the box
causes it to fly open, it isn’t the evils of the world that pour out.
Patricelli’s preschool-age Pandora couldn’t be cuter, and an
endnote explains the original myth in greater detail.
Genuinely funny and sweet."

Mighty Dads illustrated by James Dean! Scoop, scoop, scoop!
A new book from
the New York Times bestselling creator of Pete the Cat, James Dean (and me) hits stores today!
Mighty dads, strong and tall,
help their children, young and small.
They keep them safe and bolted tight
and show them how to build things right.
"When my editor told me Grady, Dumpy, Boomer, and the rest of the crew that James Dean had agreed to illustrate Mighty Dads , we went roar, roar, ROAR!" ~ Joan Holub
Mighty Dads is dedicated to hardworking fathers and the subtle ways they teach their boys and girls to follow in their tracks. The Dump Trucks learn to get dirty. Crane keeps his little one safe from harm. The busy Cement Mixer gives his daughter a hug. The Forklift cheers his son on. It means so much when Mighty Dads say, "I'm proud of you."
